Otra mentira oficial: Preparatoria obligatoria

Those Rexnord employees who voted for Trump

Many of them, perhaps most, perhaps all, voted for the grim-faced Donald Trump. We are talking about the employees of Rexnord, the Indiana bearings plant that had announced its plans to move its operations from Indiana to the city of Monterrey in Mexico. Those Rexnord employees were hoping that Trump was not merely telling them what they wanted to hear in order to get their votes. They didn't think he could be lying to them when he promised them to be their best insurance against losing their jobs. Back in December 2, President-elect Trump criticized Rexnord after he learned they were going to close an Indiana factory and move the operations to Mexico. Here is what he said: “Rexnord of Indiana is moving to Mexico and rather viciously firing all of its 300 workers. No more!”. And they believed in him. He was their Messiah. But in May 2017, the Rexnord plant began to be dismantled, and pink slips were issued to all those Rexnord employees who were set up for a rude awakening. This is the result of people putting their faith in populist demagogic politicians with forked tongues just like Donald Trump. They are always going to disappoint you.

Those employees at Rexnord thought that Trump could do the same for them as he did to those who work for Carrier also at Indiana. But the Carrier salvage operation was possible with two different things that were set into motion. First, Carrier is part of United Technologies Corporation, which has a lot of contracts with the US federal government and which sells a lot of products to the US  federal government, and Trump had threatened to take away all those contracts if Carrier moved its operations to Mexico. Whatever savings Carrier had in mind in moving its operations to Mexico would be more than offset by the loses that would have to be assimilated by its parent company. This is not the case with Rexnord, which is not owned by a bigger company such as United that has a lot of contracts with the US federal government. Second, Carrier was enticed by then Governor Mike Pence to remain in Indiana with some good tax deals he promised. But Mike Pence is no longer Governor of Indiana, he changed jobs and is now the Vice President, and he is no longer in a position to offer Rexnord the same tax deals he offered to Carrier.

Rexnord pays Indianapolis workers about $25 per hour, while in Mexico workers will be paid about $3 an hour. Trump is so far away from reality that he still thinks that Mexicans who will end up working for $3 an hour are happy and enthusiastic prancing around with joy at the opportunity of being used as slave labor by Rexnord. Right now, US companies that have moved to Mexico are finding it increasingly difficult to solve their labor shortage problem and are becoming more and more desperate for Mexican workers, while still refusing to move thier operations to some other place such as Africa.

About the only thing Donald Trump could do as President to try to keep the Rexnord manufacturing jobs in the USA is to impose heavy taxes on all Rexnord products manufactured in Mexico and sent to the USA. Indeed, in a tweet of May 7th, President Trump threatened to tax heavily all Rexnord products that are shipped from Mexico to the USA. by saying “Rexnord of Indiana made a deal during the Obama Administration to move to Mexico. Fired their employees. Tax product big that's sold in U.S.”

There is just one problem. Trump cannot single out just one US corporation for punishment while leaving all other US manufacturers untouched; he has to apply the same rule to all others, unless he wants to pick a bloody quarrel with an increasingly hostile Congress that he has completely ignored by governing with a never ending flurry of executive orders. But if he wants to do so, for all practical purposes he has to pull the USA out of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Pulling the USA out of NAFTA would set his hand free to impose all kinds of trade tariffs. But there is another problem here: if he does so, he will force many US companies into bankruptcy, not just Rexnord. Already, according to Paul Wiseman of the Associated Press, many farmers are very jittery about the plank in Trump's agenda vowing to overhaul U.S. trade policy, including his intent announced Thursday May 18th to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico. Trump's message that NAFTA is a job-killing disaster had never resonated much in rural America where many voted for Donald Trump. NAFTA had widened access to Mexican and Canadian markets, boosting U.S. farm exports and benefiting many farmers. Farm Country went on red alert last month when it looked as if Trump wasn't even going to pursue a NAFTA rewrite: White House aides had spread the word that the president would simply withdraw from the pact. “Mr. President, America's corn farmers helped elect you,” Wesley Spurlock of the National Corn Growers Association warned in a statement. “Withdrawing from NAFTA would be disastrous for American agriculture.” Within hours, Trump softened his stance. He wouldn't actually dump NAFTA, he said, at least for the time being. He'd first try to forge a more advantageous deal with Mexico and Canada - a move that formally began Thursday May 18th when his top trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, informed Congress of the administration's intent to renegotiate NAFTA.

As a candidate, Trump defined his “America First” stance as a means to fight unfair foreign competition. He blamed unjust deals for swelling U.S. trade gaps and stealing factory jobs. But NAFTA and other deals have been good for American farmers, who stand to lose if Trump ditches the pact or ignites a trade war. The United States has enjoyed a trade surplus in farm products since at least 1967, government data show. Last year, farm exports exceeded imports by $20.5 billion. “You don't start off trade negotiations ... by picking fights with your trade partners that are completely unnecessary,” says Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation Iowa farmer who produces corn, soybeans, oats and hay. Many farmers worry that Trump's policies will jeopardize their exports just as they face weaker crop and livestock prices. “It comes up pretty quickly in conversation,” says Blake Hurst, a corn and soybean farmer in northwestern Missouri's Atchison County. That county's voters backed Trump more than 3-to-1 in the election.

Trump's main argument against NAFTA and other pacts was that they exposed American workers to unequal competition with low-wage workers in countries like Mexico and China. NAFTA did lead some American manufacturers to move factories and jobs to Mexico. But since it took effect in 1994 and eased tariffs, annual farm exports to Mexico have jumped nearly five-fold to about $18 billion. Mexico is the No. 3 market for U.S. agriculture, notably corn, soybeans and pork. “The trade agreements that we've had have been very beneficial,” says Stephen Censky, CEO of the American Soybean Association. “We need to take care not to blow the significant gains that agriculture has won.”

Mexico has begun to seek alternatives to U.S. food because, as its agriculture secretary, Jose Calzada Rovirosa, said in March, Trump's remarks on trade “have injected uncertainty” into the agriculture business. Once word had surfaced that Trump was considering pulling out of NAFTA, Sonny Perdue, two days into his job as the president's agriculture secretary, hastened to the White House with a map showing areas that would be hurt most by a pullout, overlapped with many that voted for Trump. “I tried to demonstrate to him that in the agricultural market, sometimes words like 'withdraw' or 'terminate' can have a major impact on markets,” Perdue said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Trump had already delivered another disappointment for U.S. farm groups in January by fulfilling a pledge to abandon the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which the Obama administration negotiated with 11 Asia-Pacific countries. Trump argued that the pact would cost Americans jobs by pitting them against low-wage Asian labor. But the deal would have given U.S. farmers broader access to Japan's notoriously impregnable market and easier entry into fast-growing Vietnam. Philip Seng of the U.S. Meat Export Federation notes that the U.S. withdrawal from TPP left Australia with a competitive advantage because it had already negotiated lower tariffs in Japan.

Farmers know they're frequently the first casualties of trade wars. Many recall a 2009 trade rift in which China responded to U.S. tire tariffs by imposing tariffs on U.S. chicken parts. And Mexico slapped tariffs on U.S. goods ranging from ham to onions to Christmas trees in 2009 to protest a ban on Mexican trucks crossing the border.

And all of the above is just for starters. In about twelve months there will be presidential elections in Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto will no longer be the President of Mexico, and the candidate leading right now in the polls is a leftist who is already sounding off alarm bells in Washington. However, he will not have to kill NAFTA himself. He will just wait for Donald Trump to do it first, that way he can put all the blame for the economic disaster that will ensue upon the US federal government, using all the economic misery to promote a Mexican abandonment of the USA as a trading partner while forging closer ties with Eastern countries such as Russia and China.

To make a long story short, if Donald Trump pulls the USA out of NAFTA in order to satisfy the demands of those who voted for him such as the now laid off employees at Rexnord, things will begin to unravel very quickly. US goods are not just sold only in America, they are sold in a global market, and if Trump tries to force US companies to return their manufacturing operations to the US mainland by imposing stiff tariffs, all those companies will most certainly get priced out of the global market, they will no longer be able to compete, and in many cases all their lost sales may be enough to push them into bankruptcy. In other words, not only the jobs at companies such as Rexnord will have been lost forever, but those US companies themselves will have to shut down for good, which will only worsen an already bad situation. Those companies that are able to survive will be forced to sell their products solely in the USA at very high prices as compared to those of similar products manufactured outside the USA, which means that all those who live in the USA will have to get ready to witness and suffer in their own wallets one of the greatest inflationary periods in the entire history of the USA.

Rexnord employees who are now standing in food lines should at least try to get an appointment in a Trump owned business or franchise asking for a full-time job, if possible with the same $35 dollar an hour salary they were making at Rexnord. He owes them that much. However, since he is already US President he doesn't need them anymore, and he can afford to ignore them for the time being. That is, at least until his re-election comes up and ex-Rexnord employees get a chance to remind him of all his broken promises, wary against the possibility he may try to dupe them again telling them what they want to hear. And what if they vote for him again going by what he promises with no guarantee he will honor his word? Well, in that case, they already know what they can expect from him.

If former Rexnord employees vote again for Donald Trump in 2020 (assuming he makes it that far), they will be proving themselves that they got in 2017 just what they deserved, and will be getting more of the same script. In such case, we can only repeat to them an old Russian proverb: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”.

No te pido perdón, aunque a veces te llore,

manché tu imagen, me perdí yo sola,
y esa es la historia. (x2)

No te pido perdón, pues tuve motivos,
tú estabas tan lejos y yo tan mal,

manché tu imagen, me perdí yo sola,
y esa es la historia. (x2)

End of the road for the Trump presidency?

President Richard Nixon saying Adios after his resignation speech
August 9, 1974

In what is already shaping up to be an encore of the Watergate scandal that brought down the presidency of Richard Milhous Nixon (otherwise known as Tricky Dicky), Donald Trump seems to have finally cornered himself into a cul-de-sac that may end up costing him his presidency. He has already proven himself to be, at least regarding politics, as dumb as can be expected from somebody with no experience as public office, and has also shown that he has learned absolutely nothing from the history lessons provided by the downfall of Richard Nixon.

It all comes down to a recent news story published by The Washington Post, which by the way is the same newspaper that published the revelations given by Deep throat which eventually pilfered the Nixon administration down to the core. As a presidential candidate, Trump had already taken aim at The Washington Post, trying to discredit the newspaper as one more source of fake news repeating a propaganda salvo first used against CNN.

The ordeal of President Trump started with his firing of FBI director James Comey on May 10th 2017 (which, by the way, was Mother's Day in Mexico), precisely at a time when Comey was requesting more funds to expand his investigations into the Russian involvement in the presidential elections. The firing of Comey came after a meeting between the FBI director and President Trump on Friday March 24th, a meeting that was listed on the president's public schedule, raising eyebrows in people who already had suspicions that Donald Trump was trying to hide something and the firing of the FBI director was actually part of a major cover up. The Trump's firing of the FBI director immediately drew a striking resemblance to the firing of Archibald Cox during the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, the special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal who was becoming much more than a nuisance to President Nixon presumably because he was “getting warmer” closing in on President Nixon himself not just as the chief instigator of what amounted to a felony but also as the brain behind a cover up using the power of the US presidency to carry out the cover up.

With the firing of the FBI director, things were already bad enough for President Trump, mindful of the fact that President Nixon was also a Republican. But then he issued what could end up being considered by historians as his dumbest “tweet” yet. He actually threatened James Comey two days later in a Twitter outburst, writing on May 12th: “James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press”. This is the tweet that may bring his downfall:

It doesn't require an expert criminal investigator with a PhD in sociopathic behavior to conclude that this tweet was nothing less than a dire warning telling James Comey to keep himself from opening his mouth or else in case Congressional investigators try to dig deep into the real motives behind the firing of the FBI director. It is nothing less than a blackmail message, understandable in those who work inside a mafia, but... in a US president?

The warning sent by President Trump to James Comey via Twitter implies the possible existence of the recordings of all conversations carried out inside the White House without the knowledge or consent of those being recorded with the exception of the President himself who is the only one who has the authority inside the White House to order such recordings to be carried out. But this is essentially the same fatal mistake of President Nixon that provided the ammo for his downfall! How could Donald Trump, with widespread suspicions of a Russian connection that enabled Trump to become the President of the USA, be so dumb as to repeat exactly the same mistake that cost Richard Nixon his presidency?

With Donald Trump contradicting James Comey on the true reasons behind his firing and what was discussed between them in the White House the day James Comey went there on March 24th, many members of Congress concluded that the best way to discover who is telling the truth and who is lying -perhaps the only way- is by simply listening to the recorded conversation between Comey and President Trump, if such a recording exists. There were already calls on Capitol Hill for Donald Trump to hand over to Congress such recordings, a request that was ignored by President Trump just as President Nixon kept ignoring the request from Congress to hand over the White House tapes. Chuck Schumer, Senate minority leader, insisted to CNN that if Trump indeed had any recordings, he should hand them over immediately, a non-binding request that was simply ignored by President Trump.

The threatening tweet following the firing of the FBI director is just one half of the story. The other half, a true bombshell, came Monday May 15th when The Washington Post published a news story revealing that President Trump had provided highly classified information to none other than the Russians themselves, specifically to the Russian  Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak during a meeting held last week, intelligence deemed so secret that it was not even shared with USA allies such as Great Britain.

Leaking classified information to a foreign government is generally considered to be an act of treason, so much so that if some CIA employee or NSA employee incurs in such crime the discloser will most certainly land in jail just as Bradley Manning did with a sentence of 35 years in jail, and even if the leaker is not a US citizen or a US resident like Julian Assange he will still be hunted down and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And in some cases, such disclosures usually carry the death penalty as in the case of the Rosenbergs. In the case of “the little people”, the leaking of highly classified materials is considered to be a vile act of treason, and is called as such, but in the never before heard of case were the main culprit is none other than the US president himself, it is called... gosh!, There is no word in the English dictionary to describe such  gruesome act.

Deliberate mishandling or leaking of classified information with known antagonists of the USA is inexcusable, and any public official who incurs in such crimes must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. At least that's what then presidential candidate Donald Trump himself meant while referring to Hillary Clinton when he delivered a major address on National Security in Philadelphia on Wednesday September 7 2016 at the Union League of Philadelphia, declaring the former Secretary of State “unfit for office” due to her mishandling of classified information. And this was done repeatedly, not just once. If this is so, and if Donald Trump is to be judged by his own words (his words, not mine!), then he is unfit for office and he should resign immediately. Trump, who called Hillary "crooked Hillary" (she may now be gloating calling him “dumb Trump”) made the noose to hang himself.

The Washington Post quoted a US official as saying that the information revealed by President Trump to the Russian government contained “more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared even with our own allies”. According to such official, the intelligence carried one of the highest levels of classification used by US intelligence agencies. It is possible that the intelligence services of Israel were compromised as well as some of the sources of sensitive information for the Mossad. It is even possible that the lives of some Israeli operatives or their allies could have been placed in peril as a result of what Donald Trump did.

And here is where the plot gets really hot.

Exactly how much did President Trump reveal to the Russian government envoys?

Right now, no one knows for sure. All we have right now is the word of the US President, which by the way is not worth much these days.  Without an exact transcript of the confidential meeting between Trump and the Russians or the conversation recordings of the meeting, there is no way of knowing for sure.

With the FBI and Congress hot on the trail of the Russian connection, how could Donald Trump be so dumb as to meet with the Russian  Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak in a meeting that was closed to the US news media? Common sense would indicate that as President of the USA he should have avoided any contact of any sort with any Russian official at least while the ruckus over the Trump firing of the FBI director settles down, if it settles down at all. That meeting was already a very dumb move on a man who claims to be wiser and smarter than the rest of mankind, or to use a better term, plain asinine. But handing over highly classified information to the Russian government?

As if the revelations of The Washington Post were not enough, on Wednesday May 16th The New York Times came up with another bombshell: President Trump personally asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting that took place in February, according to a memo Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting. This was not a misdemeanor on the part of Donald Trump, it was a blatant attempt to obstruct justice, a legal offense which can land the offender in jail, the same mistake also done by President Nixon. Why was Donald Trump so worried? What was he trying to hide? A conclusion that can be drawn from this revelation is that President Trump fired James Comey because he was not obeying the President's request to drop the investigation of Michael T. Flynn who himself was seeking immunity from prosecution in return for his testimony at Congress, a request that was denied. (A little known fact is that President Obama actually fired Michael Flynn in 2014, and it was Trump as President who later named him National Adviser, casting serious doubts on Trump's claim of being more than able to "choose the best people for my administration". Excuse me?) As usual, Donald Trump is denying everything, just as Richard Nixon did in his time, in spite of the fact that in the end all of Nixon's denials didn't help him to dodge the impeachment trial that was being set up for him.

Again, the central question that will occupy the FBI and Congress for a long time to come as part of their investigations into the Russian connection and what the Russians may have on Donald Trump and how much he is indebted to them for being in the White House, is: exactly how much did President Trump reveal to the Russian government envoys? And the only way to know for sure is with a copy of the recording of the meeting that took place at the White House between President Trump and the Russian envoys, listening very carefully and dissecting every word. Which brings us back to the threat made by President Trump to James Comey implying the existence of recorded conversations at the White House.

Considering the seriousness of it all, Congress has the legal power not to request but to order directly Donald Trump by means of a subpoena the handing over of all conversations that could have taken place inside the White House ever since that fateful day when he took office. And if he refuses to do so, then Congress has the legal authority to initiate impeachment procedures that could end up not just in the removal of Donald Trump from his presidency but in criminal charges levied against him that could eventually land him in jail, especially if he comes up some fairy tale alleging that all those files of  “tapes of our conversations” were somehow accidentally erased, something that nobody will believe and upon which an independent special prosecutor can hammer on until Donald Trump is turn into shreds. And even in the case the suggestion made by Trump himself to the debunked FBI director by tweeting Comey better hope that there are no tapes of their conversations before he starts talking to the press is false, Trump is still hanging in the nose, because his bluff will turn into another set of sordid questions such as: Why did Trump threaten James Comey with something that did not even exist? Was that an act of sheer desperation? Why so?

It all comes down to this: either recordings of the conversations carried out at the White House since Trump became President exist, or they do not exist. Trump will eventually be forced to take a position on this by telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth unless he wants to take a gamble on committing perjury, yet another legal offense besides all the other ones he could have committed. If such recordings do exist, they will become the Holy Grail of all those who want to impeach Donald Trump and land him in prison for the rest of his life, and if the recordings exist Trump will have to hand them over to Congress whether he likes it or not. And if they do not exist, he will then expose himself as a blackmailer who resorts to intimidation in order to obstruct justice, yet another legal offense. Either way, he has hanged himself. Perhaps, in the end, Trump could resign as President giving back power to the Washington insiders while he takes his last flight on the presidential US helicopter (or perhaps the Trump helicopter as a last gesture to save the US taxpayers some money), letting Mike Pence take over so that President Pence (gee, doesn't that sound great?) can grant him a  a full, free, and absolute presidential pardon “for all offenses against the United States which he, Donald Trump, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 2017, through the day he called it quits”.

A growing list of Republicans are beginning  to realize the Donald Trump is becoming much more than a liability for the Republican party and their careers as politicians. As a matter of fact, Trump is already a liability to all his look-alikes in the rest of the world like the “Dutch Donald Trump” Geert Wilders who lost his election bid, or the “French Donald Trump” Marine Le Pen who lost by a landslide. Many politicians around the world are now trying to distance themselves from all of what Donald Trump represents; and in the USA, if it all comes down to subpoenas and an unavoidable impeachment, perhaps there will be enough Republican Congressmen who will turn their backs on Trump providing the required number of votes needed to put an end to the Trump era, in case he refuses to call it quits by simply resigning and going back to something less demanding such as hosting The Apprentice or perhaps fleeing to some other country willing to harbor him instead of living in the USA the rest of his life in shame.

Caveat: This blog entry is no April Fool's Day joke!

If Donald Trump is indeed forced by circumstance to hand over his resignation and even go into seclusion in another country to avoid being repudiated by most Americans, the only word of advice he can get from this side of the world (Mexico) is: Please, Señor Trump, don't come down to Mexico for your retirement! Perhaps some other place like the Fiji island, or Swaziland, or even the North Pole. But certainly not Mexico, where Donald Trump is not welcome. As it is, we have enough problems down here in Mexico, and we don't need one more going by the family name of Trump. And we haven't forgotten the Trump obsession with his crazy border wall to separate Mexico and the USA forever and have Mexicans pay for his demented whim, nor will Trump be forgiven by Mexicans for a very long time, perhaps only after a thousand years have gone by.

Just before Donald Trump logged his first 100 days in office as President of the United States on April 29th 2017, he leaked through his cronies a dire warning stating that he was on the verge of preparing an executive order to pull the USA completely out of the North America Free Trade Agreement. In what appears to have been a major temporary reversal, Donald Trump on Wednesday April 26th told his followers and the general public that he had told the leaders of Mexico and Canada that he would not pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, just hours after administration officials said he was considering a draft executive order to do just that. His tweet of April 27th 2017 at 5:12 AM (very early in the morning, perhaps while Trump was still in bed or in the shower) stated: “I received calls from the President of Mexico and the Prime Minister of Canada asking to renegotiate NAFTA rather than terminate. I agreed... subject to the fact that if we do not reach a fair deal for all, we will then terminate NAFTA”:

Thus, according to Trump himself, the leaders of both Canada and Mexico were pretty much scared after hearing the rumors that President Trump was on the verge of issuing an executive order pulling the USA out of NAFTA, adopting a humble attitude and humiliating themselves by almost begging Trump on their knees “to renegotiate NAFTA rather than terminate”, and the Trump storyline continued with King Trump ceding a little bit by granting Canada and Mexico a temporary reprieve, subject to the fact that if Canada and Mexico could not reach a fair deal “for all” (meaning the USA), then NAFTA would be terminated. This time, Trump was not only very angry at Mexico, he was also very angry at Canada. However, the same day when Trump issued his tweets giving his royal account on how he humiliated both the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico, in a rare moment of lucidity Trump also recognized that a sudden NAFTA pull out would be a “pretty big... shock to the system”, only to return to his angry tone against two of the biggest trading partners of the USA.

To say that a sudden USA pullout from NAFTA without any kind of orderly termination of the multilateral treaty would be “a pretty big... shock to the system”, is an understatement. Most economists now agree that killing NAFTA without at least some kind of orderly termination or some temporary replacement while the USA pulls out completely out of NAFTA is likely to bring far-reaching consequences, with the added aggravation that the dismantling of NAFTA is not something that can be easily reversed. Even England, praised by Trump for its Brexit initiative that will sever forever and ever the membership of England in the European Community, is not doing it from one day to another; it is expected to take two years if not longer. The Britons are not dumb, and they accept the fact that a drastic British pullout from the European Community has all the potential to bring severe consequences to their country. They are acting rationally. However, the USA has a leader who not only lies a lot of the time and reverses himself a lot of the time from what he has said but also acts irrationally, regardless of the consequences.

On the Mexican side, with presidential elections coming up next year, and considering that any new treaty to replace NAFTA or even to restore NAFTA after a wide far-reaching economic shock has been delivered not just to Canada and Mexico but to the US economy as well, a USA pullout from NAFTA will be impossible to reverse without the Mexican Congress willing to join (or rejoin) the dismantled NAFTA, since most of the Mexican Congressmen regardless of their political parties will be quite hesitant to carry on their shoulders the burden of mending a thorn treaty with a trading partner that cannot be trusted for the next four years. In other words, once Trump takes the USA out of NAFTA, for all practical purposes that's it! Already, right now (yes, Mister Trump, right now!) in the crucial elections to be carried out June 4th at the Estado de Mexico state for the governorship of such state, according to the most recent polls the candidate from the leftist party Morena, Delfina Gomez,  is catching up with the PRI candidate Alfredo del Mazo. Just to set thing straight, the PRI party up to now in the entire history of Mexico has never lost the governorship of the Estado de Mexico to any other opposing party. The President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, himself originates from such state. But even more important, the Estado de Mexico has the biggest share of voters of any state in the entire country. To say that a PRI loss in the Estado de Mexico would be devastating to the PRI aspirations to govern Mexico from 2018 to 2024 would be just an aperitif of very bad forecasts to the US Trump government if the leftist Morena candidate Delfina Gomez wins the Estado de Mexico election, since such a triumph could put leftist presidential contender Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in an unbeatable path to the Mexican presidency. We are talking about the left of Mexico, made up mostly of Trump haters rather than Trump lovers, taking over the presidency of Mexico for the next six years. And they are in no mood to help Donald Trump save his skin and his neck in the very likely case his anticipated sudden USA pullout from NAFTA sends the entire USA into a downward spiral. Some Mexican pundits even attribute the growing sympathy in Mexico for the leftist Morena precisely as a popular Mexican response to a xenophobic anti-Mexican racist being elected in the USA for the presidency in 2017, and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has already sounded the alarm bells in what could become a major headache for the Trump administration if the anti-Yankee left in Mexico grabs the Mexican presidency in 2018, an event that would be good news not to the USA but to the Russians and the Chinese.

So, if Donald Trump pulls the USA out of NAFTA, and a very severe economic meltdown ensues killing the US economic recovery so hardly gained during the eight years of the Obama administration, there will simply be no sympathy in a leftist-governed Mexico to try to help the US federal government quell a major economic turmoil caused by a US President acting irrationally. Yes, there will be pain and suffering in both Canada and Mexico, but there will also be a lot of pain and suffering in the USA itself.

The first ones who will be surely hit in the USA are the thousands of US farmers in the rural areas who sell their corn to the big Mexican market, they will simply succumb and go bankrupt as Mexico turns its eyes towards Brazil and Argentina to ensure its supply of corn, without showing any pity for the US corn growers who will very likely receive no economic help from the Trump administration to recover from what are expected to be devastating loses. And this is just for starters. Trump wants to impose a steep  tariff on items currently being exported from Mexico to the USA, beginning with a 35 per cent tariff on motor vehicles (this would be part of what Trump calls “a fair deal”). However, an important fact that is being ignored by a man considered by many to be the most ignorant individual to hold the US presidency, is that, in order for Mexico to build and send the finished product to the USA such as cars, a lot of US made components are integrated into such cars, which means that by imposing a stiff tariff in the finished Mexican-built product Trump would also be imposing the same stiff tariff upon those parts made in America and sent to Mexico to become part of the finished product. These are precisely the kind of issues that need to be resolved by expert economists and business leaders in the renegotiation of a commercial treaty that could take several months if not years. The imposition of the Trump tariffs would mean that an entire and very complex chain of US made sub-assembly products that supply the Mexican industry would be derailed carrying down into a big black all the US jobs that depend precisely on their exports to Mexico, and it would be derailed for good since a leftist government in Mexico would be more than glad to put the entire blame of a bad economic situation in Mexico upon the shoulders of a dumb and ignorant US president who, besides all his negative qualities, has distinguished himself as an anti-Mexican xenophobe. The outcome of such weird economic tinkering is as uncertain as Trump's logic and mode of reasoning, but it could very well end up setting a scenario for the next Second Great Depression. And these things tend to last not a few months but a very long time. As a matter of fact, after the Republicans sinked the US economy into the first Great Depression in 1929, it took more than a decade for the US to recover from such a sinkhole, and what pulled out the US out of such experimental morass was not the economic stimulus policies promoted by FDR but World War Two. The Russians tried an experiment in classical Marxism at the start of the 20th century, and to date they are still paying dearly the consequences of their failed experiment in controlled economics.

Wilbur Ross, the US Secretary of Commerce, has declared that a renegotiation of the NAFTA treaty will most likely be at the end of this year. However, this cannot possible be, since Trump cornered himself into a dead end street and did not give himself enough time to modify or renegotiate NAFTA at the very least to minimize the severe economic impact after killing NAFTA.

Apparently, when Trump made his announcement that he would try to renegotiate NAFTA instead of pulling out, most of the US press forgot what Donald Trump stated just when he took office regarding NAFTA. He very specifically mentioned a 100 day grace period allowing some renegotiation on NAFTA to take place, followed by another 100 days period at the end of which he would make his decision to withdraw the USA from NAFTA. So far, with the announcement made Wednesday April 26th by Donald Trump on the issue agreeing (his words, not mine) to renegotiate NAFTA rather than terminate, nothing has changed, and everything is still on track.

But coming August 2017, exactly 88 days from today, if Donald Trump is true to his word and the promise he made to his adoring fans in Pennsylvania, he will have to make his final decision known, and he only has two options: either he pulls the USA out of NAFTA, or the USA remains in NAFTA perhaps under further negotiations. Either way, some of his loyal followers in Pennsylvania may end up turning against him, since if he doesn't pull the USA out of NAFTA as he promised them he would do as president he will be accused of having lied to them just to get elected. And if he carries on with his promise, 88 days from today, and pulls the USA out of NAFTA setting up a chain reaction that will spiral out of control, those in Pennsylvania and the rural areas who will end up unemployed or going into bankruptcy will most certainly punish him if he attempts a re-election bid. Either way, he loses. It's a lose-lose situation.

Since Trump logged his first 100 days in office as President on Saturday April 29th, this means that today, May 11th, twelve days of the second Trump period regarding NAFTA have already been consumed, and the clock is ticking down mercilessly. There are now only 88 days left before he has to make his final decision concerning the USA and NAFTA. If he is true to his words and promises (although we have seen him make some quite dramatic reversals), 88 days from now will be all the time Trump has left to make good on his promise to withdraw the USA from a treaty he has called a disaster since he was a presidential candidate.

Quite frankly, it is impossible to renegotiate something as wide and complex as NAFTA to Trump's liking in the remaining 88 days left. It just won't happen. Furthermore, at least from the Mexican side the Mexican diplomats who represent the Mexican position have already stated that if Trump insists on the renegotiated NAFTA treaty to include tariffs, they will simply stand up and leave the negotiations, considering NAFTA dead as far as Mexicans are concerned. It is quite likely that Canada may end up doing the same thing if it does not opt to keep NAFTA as a bilateral trade deal between Mexico and Canada sans the USA. Furthermore, as stated above, a growing hatred in Mexico towards the USA, due mostly in part to the anti-Mexican Trump rhetoric, is boosting the possibilities of the front runner leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to become the next President of Mexico, and he appears in no mood to be willing to humiliate himself as President of Mexico in the face of a very aggressive Trump administration. In this respect, Donald Trump has already taken the first steps to ensure the dismantling of NAFTA by pushing Mexicans to swing towards a leftist presidential candidate, even if Trump backtracks and asks for more time for renegotiation. Once the Mexican presidential elections are over a year from now, if the Mexican left rises to power in Mexico, the NAFTA will be out of Trump's hands for good.

Donald Trump, in his hatred of the NAFTA treaty, has demerited all the hard work done in the past by those hard working US diplomats and economic advisers who carried out the negotiations of such a vast and complex multilateral deal that was originally launched by a Republican President, George H.W. Bush, portraying them as stupid clods who were taken in by very wily and evil Machiavellian negotiators from Canada and Mexico intent on imposing deliberately upon an innocent and naive USA a treaty that would be a disaster for the USA and a win-win deal for Canada and Mexico. We must remind ourselves that the negotiators on the US side had advanced college degrees, and if they were made fools by superbly Machiavellian Canadian and Mexican politicians, then this would imply that their US education wasn't worth the paper in which their college diplomas are printed, which in turn implies that education granted by US colleges is a fraud not worth a dime much less a tuition above 200 thousand dollars for a four year college degree.

A more prudent US politician, the reverse of Donald Trump, would assume that the US negotiators and diplomats of the original NAFTA treaty did their best in order to get the best possible deal for the country in a win-win situation for all parties involved, that they were not deliberate traitors nor stupid novices who didn't know what they were agreeing to. But it doesn't stop there. After being signed, NAFTA still had to be ratified by the Canadian Parliament, the Mexican Congress, and the US Congress. Even if the US NAFTA negotiators were as stupid as Donald Trump assumes they were by negotiating “a complete disaster” for the USA (his words, not mine), a majority of US Congressmen would also had to have been quite stupid indeed in order not to read the fine print. Thus, under Trump's viewpoint, there was a lot of stupidity everywhere, a lot of blame to be cast around on the US side, in the original negotiations of the NAFTA treaty. It stands to reason, according to Trump himself, that the only one who is wise enough and intelligent enough to read the fine print that nobody else can read and anticipating consequences that nobody else could have foreseen in every detail is Donald Trump.

Trump might not have the lawful authority to yank on his own the United States out of the NAFTA agreement 88 days from today, it’s a matter of debate. Many experts believe that, under Section 125 of the Trade Act of 1974, the president possesses the authority to unilaterally withdraw from trade agreements, including NAFTA. But it’s somewhat uncharted legal territory, and not all agree. Since Congress enacted NAFTA’s provisions by passing a federal law called the Implementation Act, which doesn’t grant the President the power to withdraw from NAFTA unilaterally, he can’t act on his own. Since NAFTA was approved by Congress under the authority expressly granted to Congress under the Commerce Clause, it follows that only Congress has the power to reverse that approval and cause the United States to withdraw from NAFTA. At least that's what some experts tell us.

Regardless, President Donald Trump only has 88 days remaining on the NAFTA countdown calendar in order to make his final decision. That's what he said, that's what he promised, that's the dead-end alley into which he cornered himself. Come August 8th, and the clock his ticking, someone will most surely tell him: “Time's up!”. And it will finally be the time of reckoning, not just for Donald Trump but also for many of those who voted for him.
